Malpractice Issues Deepens as Management of College of nursing UCTH point fingers on Non Nurses Rather than addressing issues

Dear Sir/Ma,

PETITION ON IRREGULAR PROMOTION OF STUDENTS CONTRARY TO NMCN REGULATIONS

We write to formally bring to your attention a matter of serious concern regarding the promotion of certain students within the College of Nursing Sciences.

According to the established guidelines of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN), any student who fails to meet the minimum requirement of 85% attendance is not eligible to sit for examinations. In line with this regulation, a group of students who did not meet the required attendance due to consistent absenteeism and lack of participation in academic activities were rightly barred from writing their examinations in December of last year.

Subsequently, these students escalated the matter to the hospital management, specifically the Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee (CMAC), Dr. Innocent Abang. Upon inquiry, the Provost presented documented evidence, including the official attendance records, confirming that the students did not meet the stipulated requirement. Based on this, the Provost maintained her position in accordance with NMCN standards.

However, months later, following further complaints made by the affected students to members of the House of Assembly, the CMAC directed the Provost to organize a supplementary examination for the same students. This directive was implemented under questionable conditions, as the affected students were given only 40 multiple choice questions and 3 theory questions, in contrast to their counterparts who were assessed with 100 multiple choice questions and 5 theory questions.

Furthermore, these students had outstanding carryover courses from ND II First Semester, with some having as many as four failed courses. Despite this, they neither cleared these carryovers nor were their supplementary results officially released. Yet, the CMAC has now instructed the Provost to promote these students to HND I.

This action is not only inconsistent with NMCN regulations but also undermines the academic integrity and long-standing standards of the institution. It is important to note that in previous years (2023, 2024, and 2025), students were denied the opportunity to sit for examinations for lesser infractions, including missing clinical postings.

The preferential treatment given to this particular group of students raises critical concerns:

* Why are these students being treated differently from others?
* On what basis were they granted supplementary examinations under reduced assessment standards?
* Why are they being promoted without clearing their academic deficiencies?

We respectfully request that the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria investigates this matter thoroughly and requires the CMAC to provide a clear and justified explanation for these actions.

We trust in your commitment to uphold fairness, discipline, and professional standards within nursing education.

It is only appropriate and credible that the issues raised be thoroughly investigated, rather than shifting blame to individuals who are not part of the nursing profession.

Dear Deputy Provost (Academics) and CMAC,

At this critical moment, we urge you to act with integrity and fairness. As leaders, it is important to uphold the values you represent by addressing these concerns transparently and ensuring a proper investigation is conducted.

As earlier stated, we are aggrieved students, and we reserve the right to express our grievances in any manner we consider appropriate.

We trust that the right steps will be taken to ensure justice and accountability.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Yours faithfully,
Aggrieved  students
