Tension escalated in western Kenya on Sunday as violence and unrest were reported ahead of a planned opposition rally in Homa Bay County.
The Linda Mwananchi movement, led by opposition figures including Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, was scheduled to hold a political rally in Homa Bay as part of its mobilisation ahead of Kenya’s 2027 general election.
Reports from the region indicated that tyres were set ablaze in parts of Homa Bay, while roads were reportedly disrupted as supporters and political leaders made their way to the rally.
Police also fired tear gas in Ndhiwa to disperse a group accused of attempting to block the Linda Mwananchi motorcade from proceeding towards Homa Bay. The security operation came amid growing concerns over possible attacks on the opposition gathering.
The situation had already raised concerns before Sunday, with organisers alleging that groups of youths could be deployed to prevent their supporters and leaders from accessing Homa Bay. Security agencies were subsequently urged to provide adequate protection for participants.
A hotel in Homa Bay was also reportedly raided by youths on Saturday night, with windows, furniture and other property damaged. Reports said the attackers were allegedly searching for supporters of the Linda Mwananchi movement.
The unrest comes as political activity intensifies ahead of Kenya’s 2027 presidential election, in which President William Ruto is expected to seek a second term.
Opposition leaders have repeatedly raised concerns about political violence and the alleged use of organised groups to disrupt their activities. Former Chief Justice David Maraga recently warned that political intolerance and the use of armed groups could threaten Kenya’s democratic freedoms.
