The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has expressed its concerns regarding the postponed salary payments and warned that if the matter is not swiftly resolved, a strike may be considered.
The union has urged President Bola Tinubu to take immediate action to remedy the issue of lecturers\’ unpaid wages, which is a result of the 2022 patriotic strike that was called off because the government disregarded earlier agreements.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities, or ASUU, may go on strike once more because of unpaid wages, according to the most recent report.
ASUU is pleading with the current administration to hasten the revision of the 2009 ASUU/FGN Agreement in addition to paying back withheld salary.
The union points to the Prof. Nimi Briggs committee\’s recommendations as the cornerstone for reestablishing the integrity of the academic system.
The debates included a range of issues that both the university system and the country as a whole were affected by.
The statement also emphasized ASUU\’s objection to the President\’s decision to dissolve the governing councils of federal universities, stating that this action is unlawful.
NEC urged the national leadership of ASUU, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), and all sincere patriots to spare no efforts in this regard. The statement said: \”NEC acknowledged the ongoing efforts to force the Federal Government to release the withheld salaries of academics.\”
\”NEC noted with grave concern that ASUU members are currently owed several months\’ worth of promotion arrears arising from distortions traceable to the coercive enrollment of academics on the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information (IPPIS) platform,\” according to the report
In a statement released after the union\’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, which took place at the University of Maiduguri in Borno State from August 19 to 20, ASUU President Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke expressed the union\’s viewpoint.
“Consequently, ASUU calls on the OAGF to ensure the immediate release of the backlog of promotion arrears to our members in the interest of industrial peace and harmony.”
