Cross River Police Say Deceased Was Rushed to UCTH but Was Confirmed Dead

The Cross River State Police Command has confirmed the unfortunate death of a female passenger, Mrs. Affiong Peters, following a medical emergency that occurred late on Saturday night in Calabar.

According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, the incident occurred on Saturday, July 11, 2026, at approximately 11:30 p.m.

How the Incident Happened

Preliminary findings by the Police revealed that a commercial mini bus driver, identified as Mr. John Okon John, reported the incident at the Atakpa Police Station after one of his passengers suddenly became unresponsive during the journey.

The driver was reportedly conveying eight passengers from the Watt Roundabout towards the Edgerly–Mbukpa–Afukam axis when one passenger requested to alight at Edgerly by William George.

During the process of allowing the passenger to disembark, Mrs. Affiong Peters reportedly stepped out of the vehicle, suddenly sat on the ground, and became unresponsive.

Police said she was unable to speak, prompting immediate concern from other passengers.

Victim Rushed to UCTH

Following the incident, concerned passengers quickly assisted in returning Mrs. Peters to the vehicle and rushed her to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) for emergency medical attention.

However, despite efforts to save her life, medical personnel at the hospital later confirmed her dead.

Family Notified

The Cross River State Police Command disclosed that the deceased’s family has been identified and duly informed of the development.

According to the statement, family members are currently making arrangements for the preservation and burial of her remains.

The Police Command expressed condolences to the bereaved family over the unfortunate incident.
