In a dramatic reversal ahead of the FIFA World Cup Round of 16, FIFA has suspended the one-match ban imposed on United States striker Folarin Balogun, making him eligible to face Belgium in Monday’s knockout encounter.
Balogun had been handed an automatic one-match suspension after receiving a straight red card during the USA’s 2-0 Round of 32 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina. The in-form forward was dismissed after stepping on the right ankle of Bosnia defender Tarik Muharemovic in the second half of the match.
However, FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee announced on Sunday that the suspension had been put on hold, allowing the 25-year-old to feature against Belgium. The decision is understood to place Balogun under a one-year probationary period, meaning any similar disciplinary offence within that period could reactivate the suspended sanction.
The ruling comes as a major boost for the United States, with Balogun emerging as one of the team’s standout performers at the tournament. His return strengthens the Americans’ attacking options as they seek a place in the World Cup quarter-finals against a formidable Belgian side.
The unexpected decision has sparked widespread debate, with Belgium’s football authorities reportedly expressing surprise and considering their options following FIFA’s reversal.
