The United Nations has condemned an attack on a humanitarian facility in Libya’s capital, Tripoli, where migrants were present, describing the incident as a series of “deeply aggressive acts.”
The facility, which is managed by a UN agency, was reportedly stormed on Monday, with videos circulating on social media showing individuals forcing their way into the premises, damaging furniture and driving people from the facility.
The UN in Libya said the incidents occurred at a service centre operated by one of its agencies, while the International Organization for Migration (IOM) confirmed that its humanitarian operations in the country are focused on supporting vulnerable migrants and other displaced communities.
In a statement issued late Monday, the UN condemned what it described as repeated incidents at the facility and expressed concern over the safety of humanitarian workers and people receiving assistance.
The development comes amid continuing concerns over the security of UN personnel and humanitarian facilities in Libya. The UN has previously warned that misinformation and inflammatory narratives surrounding migration issues have contributed to threats and violence against humanitarian workers and UN premises.
The latest incident has renewed calls for the protection of humanitarian facilities and personnel, as well as vulnerable migrants who depend on such centres for essential assistance and protection services.
