The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has raised the alarm over a fake Distance Learning Centre operating in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, and allegedly using the institution’s name and logo to deceive members of the public.
In a circular issued by the Registrar, Dr. (Mrs.) Chukwuka I. Icha, the university identified the centre as Bori Business School, located at the NUJ Press Centre, Moscow Road, Port Harcourt.
According to the circular, the centre advertises Diploma, B.Sc., B.A., PGD and Ph.D. programmes while falsely presenting itself as affiliated with UNICAL.
Management clarified that Bori Business School has no affiliation with the University of Calabar and has never been authorised to operate academic programmes on behalf of the institution.
The university recalled that it discontinued the operation of satellite campuses in 2003 following a directive from the Federal Ministry of Education through the National Universities Commission (NUC), which prohibited such centres.
UNICAL stressed that it has no satellite campus, coordinator or agent authorised to admit students or conduct academic programmes on its behalf outside its approved campuses.
Management consequently advised members of the public to be vigilant and avoid individuals or organisations falsely claiming to represent the university.
The university also called on the Rivers State Ministry of Education to investigate the activities of Bori Business School and ensure its closure for allegedly using UNICAL’s identity without authorisation.
UNICAL urged prospective students to verify all information about admissions and academic programmes through the university’s official channels before enrolling or making payments.
