UNICAL Speaks on Court Order Involving VC, University Chaplain

Written by Mary Bassey

The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has clarified the circumstances surrounding a recent court order involving its Vice-Chancellor and five others, urging the public not to interpret the development as a final judgment on the dispute.

In a statement titled “Court Bars UNICAL VC and Five Others from Evicting University Chaplain: Setting the Facts Straight,” the university said the substantive case remains before the court and has not been finally determined.

Management explained that an interim or interlocutory order does not amount to a final determination of the rights and obligations of the parties. It therefore urged the public to distinguish between temporary judicial orders and final judgments.

The university also said it is governed by its enabling laws, regulations and approved policies, adding that organisations operating within its premises are expected to comply with institutional rules.

According to Management, the leadership crisis within the church predates the present administration and has persisted for more than two years. It said successive efforts had been made to encourage dialogue, reconciliation and peaceful resolution.

The university stated that the situation eventually escalated into a physical confrontation involving some church leaders, prompting Management to intervene to protect lives, property and maintain peace on campus.

UNICAL also denied allegations that Reverend Ushie was assaulted or persecuted by university authorities, stressing that its intervention was aimed at de-escalating tensions.

Management said it had already brokered a truce between the disputing parties and remains committed to reconciliation.

The university urged responsible reporting of the ongoing case, stressing that the court has not yet substantively determined the dispute.

It reaffirmed its commitment to due process, peace, security and the welfare of the entire university community.
