The Federal Government will soon start punishing vehicle owners who damage roads across the country. This was announced by the Minister of State for Works, Barrister Bello Mohammed Goronyo, on Tuesday.

The Minister gave this warning during an inspection of the 58km road repair project on the Sokoto-Illela road in Sokoto State. The repairs are being carried out by the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA).

Goronyo explained that the government spends a lot of money every year on fixing and maintaining roads. He warned that the government will no longer tolerate vehicle owners whose actions destroy the roads.

“We are launching the ‘Operation Safeguard Our Roads’ initiative to protect our roads from damage,” he said. “We need the support of all stakeholders to make this project a success.”

The Minister stressed that roads are important national assets. They play a major role in providing a good transportation system, which helps to grow the economy and improve the lives of citizens.

Goronyo also urged state and local governments, as well as citizens, to work with the Federal Government to protect the roads. He encouraged residents to report any unlawful activities or road misuse to the nearest authorities.

Earlier in Sokoto, the Minister launched solar-powered street lights installed by FERMA at Sultan Abubakar International Airport and nearby roads. He said the project will improve safety, especially at night, in areas that were previously considered unsafe. The lights will also make it easier for security agencies to monitor the area.

The Managing Director of FERMA, Dr. Emeka Agbasi, praised the Minister’s efforts. He said the street light and road repair projects are part of FERMA’s goal to improve road conditions across Nigeria. Dr. Agbasi also highlighted the Minister’s commitment to supporting President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which focuses on transforming Nigeria’s infrastructure and economy.

These efforts are part of a larger plan to ensure that Nigeria’s roads are safe, durable, and supportive of economic growth.
