What Gombe Govt Just Approved for State University

Written by Mary Bassey

Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Yahaya, has approved an additional N148.762 million monthly subvention for Gombe State University (GSU), in a move aimed at supporting the implementation of the Consolidated Academic Tool Allowance for academic staff.

The additional funding is expected to take effect from October 2026, according to information on the approval.

The decision comes amid ongoing concerns over the implementation of the 2025 Federal Government–Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) agreement and outstanding entitlements owed to lecturers at the institution.

ASUU’s Gombe State University branch had earlier demanded the settlement of several outstanding payments, including the backlog of Earned Academic Allowance covering 2021 to 2024, wage award arrears, minimum wage arrears and other allowances contained in the 2025 agreement.

In July, the ASUU Bauchi Zone also criticised the Gombe and Plateau state governments over what it described as failure to implement the 2025 agreement, warning that the situation could lead to industrial unrest in the affected universities.

The latest approval is therefore expected to address part of the financial demands surrounding the welfare of academic staff and help prevent further disruption to academic activities at Gombe State University.

The university’s ASUU branch had reportedly issued a 14-week ultimatum to the state government over the implementation of its demands. The ultimatum had not expired as of the time of the latest development.

The intervention by the state government comes as ASUU continues to push for the implementation of agreements reached with governments over improved welfare, salaries and allowances for university lecturers.
