An Anambra State High Court sitting in Ogidi has sentenced a church choirmaster, James Mary Onuorah, to 25 years in prison after finding him guilty of raping a 16-year-old girl during what was described as a “deliverance” session.
The judgment was delivered on Friday, July 17, by Justice Chudi Nwankwo of High Court 2, Ogidi Judicial Division, following the conclusion of the criminal trial.
According to court records in Charge No. HID/4C/2025, the prosecution charged Onuorah with three offences. After reviewing the evidence presented, the court convicted him on two counts—rape and offensive conduct—while delivering its verdict in the case between the State and James Mary Onuorah.
Justice Nwankwo sentenced the convict to 25 years’ imprisonment for rape and seven years for offensive conduct. The sentences reflect the court’s decision on the separate offences for which he was found guilty.
The case has drawn attention to the abuse of trust in religious settings and underscores the judiciary’s commitment to holding perpetrators of sexual violence accountable, regardless of their status or position in society.
Legal observers say the judgment reinforces the importance of protecting minors from sexual abuse and encourages victims and their families to report such crimes to law enforcement authorities.
The conviction adds to ongoing efforts by authorities in Anambra State to combat sexual and gender-based violence and ensure justice for survivors.
