The Executive Chairman of Yakurr Local Government Council, Hon. Inyang Yibala Igri, has expressed deep concern over the violent clashes that recently erupted in Ugep, describing the incident as heartbreaking, shameful, and a betrayal of the community’s values of peace and unity.
In his statement, Hon. Inyang said:
“My heart is heavy as I address the violent clash that erupted in Ugep recently. The sight of our own people, including innocent bystanders, being struck by stray bullets is one that no leader ever wants to witness. This violence is not just unfortunate; it is a betrayal of the peace and unity we have worked so hard to build in Yakurr. I condemn it in its entirety.”
The Chairman stated unequivocally that his administration will not tolerate gangsterism, terrorism, or criminality in any form within Yakurr Local Government Area. He emphasized that no group or individual will be allowed to derail the progress and stability of the LGA through acts of violence and destruction.
To this effect, Hon. Inyang disclosed that he has given full directives and support to all relevant security agencies to investigate the incident thoroughly and ensure that every individual responsible for the unrest is arrested and prosecuted. He assured residents that justice must and will be served.

He further appealed to the people of Yakurr to remain calm and law-abiding while security agencies carry out their work.
“I have a direct appeal to every citizen of Yakurr: Remain calm and do not take the law into your own hands. Be responsible on social media. Do not spread unverified information or inflame tensions for the sake of likes and shares. This only helps the criminals and hurts our community,” he said.
Hon. Inyang reminded the public that security is a collective responsibility and urged citizens to cooperate with law enforcement by providing timely information.
“If you see something, say something. Your silence only empowers those who wish to destroy our peace,” he added.
The Chairman also assured the victims of the clashes who are currently receiving treatment that the Yakurr Local Government Council will cover the full cost of their medical bills, stressing that the welfare of the people remains his administration’s top priority.
In closing, Hon. Inyang expressed deep displeasure over the “ugly event” but assured residents that his administration will work tirelessly to restore peace and stability.
“We will not rest until calm returns to Ugep. We owe it to ourselves, our children, and the future of Yakurr to protect this land from those who seek to destroy it. Together, we will overcome this setback and build a stronger, more united community,” he concluded.
