2027: Obi Breaks Silence After Tension Rocks His Visit to Calabar

Written by Mary Bassey

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has condemned alleged political violence following a tense incident involving his supporters and members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Calabar, Cross River State.

The incident occurred on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, as Obi and his running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, visited the state for a presidential town hall meeting ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Earlier reports indicated that Obi’s media aide, Ester Umoh, raised an alarm over an alleged attempt by suspected thugs to attack the campaign convoy, writing on social media that “Thugs are trying to attack our convoy.”

The situation reportedly created tension around the meeting venue as supporters of the NDC and APC converged in the area.

However, the Cross River State Police Command confirmed that its operatives intervened to prevent a possible confrontation between participants at the NDC town hall meeting and APC supporters conducting a rally and road walk towards the Government House.

The police spokesperson, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, said officers engaged both groups, appealed for restraint and restored normalcy in the area.

The incident has renewed concerns about political intolerance and the need for peaceful political activities as preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum.
