Senate Rejects Nigeria Air Revival, Makes Fresh Demand Over China Flights

Written by Mary Bassey

The Nigerian Senate has rejected calls for the immediate revival of Nigeria Air, instead urging the Federal Government to renegotiate and enforce the existing aviation agreement with China to secure direct flight opportunities for Nigerian airlines.

The resolution followed deliberations on a motion concerning Nigeria’s Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA) with China, sponsored by the Senate Chief Whip, Senator Tahir Monguno.

The lawmakers expressed concern that Nigerian airlines were not enjoying equal access to the Chinese aviation market, despite Chinese airlines operating flights into Nigeria.

They called on the Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development to review the agreement and ensure that Nigerian carriers receive reciprocal rights to operate direct commercial flights to China.

Senators argued that establishing direct air connections would reduce travel time, improve trade relations, support businesses and create more opportunities for Nigerian airlines.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio warned that Nigeria might have to reconsider the privileges granted to Chinese airlines if Nigerian carriers continued to face restrictions in accessing China’s aviation market.

The Senate also called for diplomatic discussions between Nigeria and China to facilitate business visas for Nigerian traders and secure reciprocal airport slot allocations.

Meanwhile, the proposal to revive Nigeria’s national carrier, Nigeria Air, generated further debate among lawmakers. Although some senators supported the idea of establishing a Nigerian-owned airline, concerns were raised about the viability of reviving the abandoned project.

The Senate’s position highlights the need to strengthen indigenous airlines and ensure that Nigeria receives fair benefits from its international aviation agreements.

The Senate Committees on Aviation and Foreign Affairs are expected to monitor the implementation of the resolutions.
