Following the suspension of the Senate President, Sen. Kanung Benjamin, on October 7, 2025, the Senate of the 16th Plutonium Assembly, University of Cross River State (UNICROSS), has officially confirmed his impeachment after a thorough investigative process and strict compliance with constitutional procedures.
The suspension was carried out under SECTION 15: FORFEITURE OF SEAT AND RESIGNATION of the Students’ Union Government (SUG) Constitution, which mandates that:
“Any member of Senate who is indicted for alleged grievous misconduct shall vacate his seat until proven innocent.”
In accordance with this provision, the Senate President was suspended pending investigation into allegations of misconduct.

To ensure due process, the Senate invoked SECTION 21: REMOVAL OF OFFICE HOLDERS, subsection (iv), which empowers the Senate to:
“Set up an Ad-hoc Investigation Committee once a simple majority resolves that allegations be investigated. The concerned Officer shall stand suspended until the investigation is concluded. If found guilty, the Officer shall be relieved of his post, subject to ratification by two-thirds majority of the Senate.”
Findings of the Ad-Hoc Committee
The Ad-Hoc Committee conducted a full investigation, during which the suspended Senate President was granted fair hearing. During the proceedings, he reportedly admitted to all allegations and pleaded for forgiveness.

After reviewing the committee’s findings, the Senate—by a two-thirds majority—ratified the impeachment of Sen. Kanung Benjamin on the following grounds:
-
Misappropriation of over ₦6,000,000 (Six Million Naira) belonging to the Senate.
-
Abuse of office and violation of financial procedures.
-
Unlawful declaration of the Senate’s account as his personal account.
