Chief Dr. Martha Agba PhD, the Onyie’iritiem I of Bekwarra, yesterday officially flagged off a Free Hepatitis B Diagnosis and Treatment Programme, alongside a major empowerment initiative for business women in Bekwarra, Cross River State.
The remarkable event, which attracted a large turnout of men, women, youths, elders, and community leaders from across the ten political wards of the local government area, was aimed at improving public health, promoting women’s economic growth, and strengthening community awareness on social responsibilities.

As part of the day’s activities, Dr. Agba paid a visit to Bekwarra Secondary School, Abuochiche, one of the oldest secondary schools in the area, where she demonstrated her strong commitment to education and youth development.
In a touching moment, she awarded a full educational scholarship to Master Akwaji Boniface Akwaji, an SS1 student, promising to sponsor his education through to completion, including full payment of his West African Examinations Council (WAEC) fees.
Speaking during the event, Dr. Agba described Bekwarra as home and emphasized the importance of giving back to one’s roots. According to her, true development begins when individuals remember where they come from and invest meaningfully in their communities.
In her usual spirit of generosity, the revered traditional title holder also provided cash support to Bekwarra business women to help strengthen and expand their businesses.
The programme also featured awareness sessions highlighting the responsibilities of parents and citizens in preventing rape against minors and women, as well as tackling other social vices within society.
Expressing deep gratitude, the Chairperson of the Bekwarra Business Women described the empowerment as rare and unprecedented, noting that such a gesture of compassion and commitment had not been witnessed in recent times. She offered heartfelt prayers for God’s continued blessings, strength, and elevation for Dr. Agba so she can continue impacting lives and uplifting humanity.
The event was widely described as a day of health, empowerment, education, and community growth, a true reflection of leadership driven by compassion and service.
