More than 500,000 residents of the Yache communities in Yala Local Government Area, Cross River State, have called for the immediate restoration of electricity, citing years of infrastructure neglect that have hindered economic growth and affected daily life.
The affected communities made the appeal in a formal letter addressed to the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the South-South Development Commission at the commission’s headquarters in Uyo. A copy of the letter was obtained by The Guardian.
According to the communities, the prolonged power outage has had devastating consequences on businesses, healthcare services, education, and other essential economic activities. Residents lamented that the absence of electricity has forced many small businesses to shut down or rely on expensive alternative sources of power, worsening the economic hardship faced by families.
The communities urged the South-South Development Commission to intervene urgently by facilitating the rehabilitation and restoration of the area’s electricity infrastructure. They stressed that access to stable electricity is essential for improving living standards, attracting investment, and stimulating economic development across the affected communities.
Community leaders also appealed to both the federal and state governments to prioritize infrastructure development in Yache, arguing that years of neglect have left thousands of residents without access to basic public services.
They expressed hope that the commission would respond swiftly to their request and implement lasting solutions to restore electricity and improve the overall welfare of the people.
The residents maintained that restoring power to the communities would not only improve livelihoods but also promote economic growth, enhance security, and create a better future for the more than 500,000 people living in the area.
