Police Arrest Four Over Benin Market Kidnap, Recover Weapons, Vehicle and ₦2 Million Cash The Edo State Police Command has arrested four suspected kidnappers allegedly involved in the abduction of a woman at the Vegetable Market in Benin City, while one suspected gang member was killed during a gun battle with operatives.
According to the police, the suspects were apprehended following an intelligence-led operation launched after the victim was kidnapped on June 14, 2026, while shopping with her husband and children at the busy market.
The command disclosed that sustained investigations and coordinated tactical operations led officers to the hideout of the suspected kidnappers, where they encountered armed resistance. During the exchange of gunfire, one of the suspects was fatally wounded, while four others were arrested.
Items recovered from the suspects include a Lexus SUV believed to have been used during the kidnapping operation, a pump-action shotgun, several live cartridges, a motorcycle, and more than ₦2 million suspected to be proceeds of criminal activities.
Police authorities said the arrested suspects have made useful confessional statements that are aiding ongoing investigations. Detectives are also probing their possible involvement in other kidnapping and violent crimes committed across Edo State.
The command assured residents that efforts are underway to apprehend other fleeing members of the gang and reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening security across the state.
It also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and continue providing timely and credible information that could assist security agencies in combating kidnapping, armed robbery, and other criminal activities.
Authorities reiterated that anyone found culpable after investigations would be charged to court in accordance with the law.
