The Cross River State House of Assembly on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, screened and confirmed Obi Ayuk as the new Commissioner for Culture and Tourism following his nomination by the Governor of Cross River State, Senator Prince Bassey Otu.
His confirmation marks the official emergence of a substantive commissioner to oversee the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, a position that became vacant following the death of the former Commissioner, Hon. Abubakar Robert Ewa, whose passing was widely mourned across the state.
The development brings a new chapter for the ministry, which plays a pivotal role in promoting Cross River State’s rich cultural heritage, tourism assets, and creative economy. The ministry is also responsible for coordinating major tourism initiatives and cultural events that have positioned Cross River as one of Nigeria’s leading tourism destinations.
During the confirmation process, lawmakers expressed confidence in Ayuk’s capacity to provide leadership and drive the vision of the Governor Bassey Otu-led administration for the tourism and culture sector.
The appointment comes at a critical time as the state government continues efforts to strengthen tourism development, attract investments, preserve cultural heritage, and enhance the global appeal of Cross River’s tourism offerings.
With his confirmation, Obi Ayuk is expected to immediately assume office and begin implementing policies and programs aimed at advancing the culture and tourism sector in line with the administration’s development agenda.
Stakeholders have expressed optimism that his leadership will further consolidate Cross River State’s position as Nigeria’s premier tourism destination while building on the achievements and legacy of the late Hon. Abubakar Robert Ewa.
