The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has criticised President Bola Tinubu for allegedly failing to personally reach out to Seyi Makinde more than 50 days after the abduction of pupils and teachers in Ogbomoso, Oyo State.
In a statement issued on Monday, Obi described the President’s alleged silence as disturbing and symptomatic of what he called a growing leadership failure in the country, particularly in responding to the worsening security situation.
According to Obi, he was shocked to learn that Tinubu had reportedly not contacted Governor Makinde since armed men abducted dozens of schoolchildren and their teachers during the attack in Ogbomoso, despite the incident drawing national concern.
The former Anambra State governor argued that in moments of national tragedy, citizens expect the President to demonstrate empathy, provide reassurance, and coordinate efforts with affected state governments.
Obi said the alleged lack of direct communication from the President sends the wrong signal to victims, their families, and Nigerians who continue to grapple with rising insecurity across the country.
He maintained that effective leadership requires compassion, prompt engagement, and decisive action, especially when innocent schoolchildren become victims of criminal attacks.
The opposition figure urged the Federal Government to intensify efforts to secure the safe return of those still in captivity and implement stronger measures to tackle kidnapping and other violent crimes across the country.
The Ogbomoso school abduction, which occurred more than 50 days ago, sparked widespread outrage and renewed concerns over the safety of schools and the persistent threat posed by armed criminal groups operating in parts of the country.
