Millions of MTN subscribers across Nigeria have welcomed the restoration of the network’s airtime lending service after weeks of disruption caused by a regulatory dispute involving telecommunications operators and deposit money banks.
The return of the service has been widely described as a major relief, particularly for customers who rely on emergency airtime and data advances to stay connected when they run out of credit.
For many users, the restoration goes beyond convenience. Borrowed airtime has become an essential backup that enables subscribers to make urgent calls, access mobile banking services, communicate with family and friends, and remain connected for work and other daily activities.
One of those celebrating the return of the service is Farouk Rabiu, an employee of a Lagos-based firm, who said the suspension caught him off guard and affected his ability to stay connected during emergencies.
“The first time I realized I could no longer borrow airtime on my MTN line came as a surprise. I had always depended on the service whenever I ran out of credit, especially when it was difficult to recharge immediately,” Rabiu said.
The temporary suspension followed a disagreement between telecommunications companies and banks over outstanding debts linked to USSD services, which affected several value-added services, including airtime and data lending. With the issues now largely resolved, MTN has resumed the airtime borrowing service, allowing eligible customers to once again access emergency credit based on their usage history and repayment record.
Industry observers say the restoration is expected to improve customer experience and provide much-needed support for subscribers who depend on the service for uninterrupted communication.
