Written by Mary Bassey

The Federal Government has launched a new mobile learning initiative aimed at improving the professional development of teachers and school leaders across Nigeria through digital technology.

The programme, unveiled by the Federal Ministry of Education in partnership with the UNESCO International Institute for Capacity Building in Africa (UNESCO-IICBA) and the Pan African University (PAU), began on Monday in Abuja.

The three-day Master Training Programme, scheduled to run from July 21 to 23, 2026, is themed “Empowering Female Teachers and School Leaders through Integrating Mobile-based Learning in the Pan-African Virtual and Electronic University (PAVEU) Initiative.”

The initiative is funded by the Government of Japan and forms part of a broader UNESCO-IICBA programme covering five African countries—Algeria, Cameroon, Kenya, Nigeria and South Sudan.

According to the Federal Ministry of Education, the project is designed to expand access to quality continuous professional development, with a special focus on empowering female teachers and school leaders through flexible, technology-driven learning.

The programme uses mobile technology to address challenges such as limited access to training, geographical barriers, time constraints and inadequate infrastructure. Participants will be able to access learning materials through a low-data, offline-friendly platform, making professional development more accessible regardless of location.

The ministry reiterated its commitment to improving teacher quality through digital innovation, stressing that continuous and accessible professional development is vital to enhancing learning outcomes and building a resilient, inclusive and future-ready education system.
