A 25-year-old graduate of the University of Jos, Ibrahim Pilasar Mbaya, popularly known as “Ibee,” has died after he was allegedly beaten by a mob over accusations of stealing a missing iPhone 12 in Jos, Plateau State. The tragic incident has sparked widespread outrage and renewed calls for an end to jungle justice in Nigeria.
According to the Plateau State Police Command, the incident occurred after Mbaya spent the night at a friend’s off-campus apartment. The following morning, an iPhone 12 was reported missing, and he was accused of taking the device. Instead of reporting the matter to the police, some individuals allegedly assaulted him with wooden planks and other objects until he became unconscious. He was later rushed to the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH), where doctors confirmed him dead on arrival.
Police spokesperson SP Alfred Alabo confirmed that three suspects — Rinji Daniel Fwanji, Emmanuel Newyear, and Nensemka Fwanji — have been arrested in connection with the killing, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend other suspects who reportedly fled. Investigators also disclosed that one of the suspects was identified in a viral video allegedly striking the victim with a large wooden plank.
The Plateau State Police Command condemned the act, describing it as a clear case of jungle justice. The command warned residents against taking the law into their own hands, stressing that anyone suspected of committing a crime should be handed over to law enforcement agencies for proper investigation and prosecution.
The heartbreaking death of Mbaya has triggered emotional reactions from family members, students, and Nigerians on social media, with many demanding justice and urging authorities to ensure that everyone involved is brought to book.
