The House of Representatives Committee on Defence has renewed its call for the full enforcement of Nigeria’s local content policy in defence procurement, urging the Armed Forces and other government agencies to prioritise the purchase of locally manufactured military equipment.
The committee made the call on Tuesday during the unveiling of the AEGIS-X 2.0, a light tactical armoured vehicle designed and produced by indigenous defence company, X-Shield Solutions Company Limited, in Abuja.
Speaking at the event, the Chairman of the House Committee on Defence, Babajimi Benson, who was represented by his Chief of Staff, Benjamin Ekeyi, said Nigeria must reduce its dependence on imported military hardware by supporting local defence manufacturers capable of producing world-class equipment.
According to Benson, continued reliance on foreign-made military assets places unnecessary financial pressure on the country, especially when local companies have demonstrated the capacity to meet many of the nation’s defence needs.
He stressed that strengthening indigenous defence production would not only save foreign exchange but also promote technology transfer, create jobs, enhance national security, and boost Nigeria’s industrial development.
The lawmaker noted that the House Committee on Defence has consistently advocated increased government patronage of local defence firms and pledged to work towards ensuring that the Federal Government’s local content policy is fully implemented across the defence sector.
The unveiling of the AEGIS-X 2.0 marks another milestone in Nigeria’s efforts to strengthen its indigenous defence manufacturing industry, as stakeholders continue to push for greater investment in locally produced military technology.
