Luis Figo Calls for Gianni Infantino to Resign as FIFA President
Former Portugal captain Luis Figo has publicly called for Gianni Infantino to step down as FIFA president, delivering one of the strongest criticisms yet of the football governing body’s leader.
In a strongly worded statement, Figo said he was joining “other people from all corners of our game” in demanding Infantino’s resignation, accusing the FIFA president of betraying the trust of the football community.
According to Figo, Infantino has “degraded the position he promised to elevate,” alleging that the FIFA chief “lied, deceived, and tried to serve his own interests at the expense of the game he is supposed to serve.”
The former Ballon d’Or winner also claimed that Infantino has lost the confidence of key figures within world football, including senior FIFA staff, close advisers, and many individuals who have dedicated their careers to the sport. Figo further stated that even the recipient of FIFA’s Sports for Peace award no longer supports the current leadership.
Figo ended his statement with a passionate appeal for change, insisting that while it may be too late for Infantino to restore his own reputation, it is “not too late to save football.”
“He should go. Now.”
The comments add to growing pressure surrounding FIFA’s leadership and are likely to spark further debate across the global football community. As one of the game’s most respected former players, Figo’s remarks carry significant weight and could encourage more prominent voices to speak out.
At the time of publication, FIFA and Gianni Infantino had not publicly responded to Figo’s statement.
Whether the call leads to wider action within world football remains to be seen, but Figo’s intervention has already become one of the most high-profile demands for a change in FIFA’s leadership in recent times.
