A 22-year-old man from Equatorial Guinea has shared a chilling account of how he was lured into joining Russian forces before finding himself on the front lines of the war in Ukraine.
Daniel Angel Masie Nchama, a former Information Technology student, said he believed he was travelling abroad for a better opportunity, only to discover he had been recruited into a conflict he knew little about.
Speaking to AFP after returning to his family home in Malabo, the young man recounted the terrifying moment he realised he had been sent into active combat.
“I realised we were at the front when a missile struck us,” he said, describing the fear and confusion that followed.
According to Nchama, he endured harsh conditions, including freezing temperatures, hunger and constant danger while in Ukraine. He eventually managed to escape the conflict and return home with the assistance of Equatorial Guinea’s diplomatic authorities.
His ordeal has renewed concerns over reports that vulnerable young Africans are being targeted by recruiters promising lucrative jobs or opportunities abroad, only for some to end up fighting in foreign conflicts.
Nchama said his decision to leave home was driven by hopes of building a better future, but the experience turned into a nightmare that nearly cost him his life.
His story serves as a warning to young people seeking overseas opportunities to carefully verify recruitment offers and avoid falling victim to deceptive schemes that could place them in life-threatening situations.
