The management of Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, has expelled 42 students after they were found guilty of examination malpractice following investigations by the institution’s Examination Malpractice Committee.
The affected students comprise 31 Higher National Diploma (HND) students and 11 National Diploma (ND) students, drawn from various institutes and programmes across the Polytechnic.
The decision was disclosed in a statement issued by the Principal Assistant Registrar, Academic Board Matters Division, Ibrahim Esin, on Monday.
According to Esin, the students were investigated after allegations of examination malpractice were brought against them and were subsequently found guilty following due process by the Examination Malpractice Committee.
He said the offences violated the Matriculation Oath sworn by the students upon their admission into the institution.
The Polytechnic said the expulsions were approved in line with the provisions of its Students’ Handbook, effectively ending the students’ relationship with the institution.
A breakdown showed that the Institute of Finance and Management Studies recorded the highest number of affected students with 23 expulsions. The Institute of Technology followed with eight, while the Institute of Information and Communication Technology and the Centre for Continuing Education recorded four each.
Two students were expelled from the Institute of Health Technology, while one student from the Institute of General Studies was also affected.
The students were enrolled in programmes including Mechatronics Engineering, Civil Engineering, Strategic Communication, Journalism and Media Studies, Public Administration, Business Administration, Banking and Finance, Accountancy, Electrical/Electronic Engineering and Medical Imaging Technology, among others.
The management also directed the expelled students to return all Polytechnic property in their possession to their respective Heads of Department or other designated authorities.
The Polytechnic said the disciplinary action followed the conclusion of the examination malpractice investigations and the approval of the expulsions by the appropriate authorities.
