Chijioke Ihunwo, a former loyalist of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, has explained why he is now working with the Rainbow Coalition, a political group aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
Ihunwo, who previously served as the caretaker chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, said his decision should not be seen as a betrayal of Governor Fubara. According to him, he is simply following the governor’s call for peace and reconciliation in Rivers State.
Speaking during an appearance on TVC’s Beyond the Headlines on Thursday, Ihunwo maintained that his current political position reflects the governor’s appeal for stakeholders to embrace peace rather than continue the prolonged political conflict in the state.
The former council chairman had earlier appeared twice on the same programme, where he strongly criticised Wike’s camp, accusing its members of attempting to destabilise Rivers State amid the political crisis between the governor and his predecessor.
Addressing questions about his apparent change of position, Ihunwo said politics is dynamic and that circumstances can change over time. He stressed that his decision was driven by the need to support peace and stability rather than deepen political divisions.
His comments come as political realignments continue in Rivers State following months of tension between supporters of Governor Fubara and allies of Wike, with several political figures adopting new positions as reconciliation efforts gain momentum.
