The Oyo State Police Command has responded to renewed allegations surrounding the 2021 shooting of Nurudeen Azeez, a graduate of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, insisting that its officers were not responsible for the incident.
The command said forensic findings from an investigation conducted after the incident cleared Inspector Gbenga Ayodele and Sergeant Ayilaran Boluwaji, both attached to the Agodi Divisional Police Headquarters, of any involvement in the shooting.
The police made the clarification in a statement issued on Saturday by the command’s spokesperson, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, following the recent resurfacing of the case in a viral video and newspaper report.
According to the command, the incident occurred in 2021 when police officers responded to an armed robbery operation in Ibadan. The police said an investigation was subsequently conducted to establish the circumstances surrounding Azeez’s shooting.
The command maintained that the investigation, including forensic examination, did not establish a connection between the two officers and the shooting.
The police said the renewed claims were being addressed because of the circulation of the video and publication, which it said had brought the old case back into public attention.
The command urged members of the public to rely on verified findings rather than unsubstantiated claims, while reaffirming its commitment to transparency and accountability.
It also maintained that investigations into allegations involving police personnel would continue to be handled in accordance with established procedures and available evidence.
