Jason Arday, the British sociologist who made history as the youngest Black professor at the University of Cambridge, has resigned from the university amid an investigation into aspects of his academic career.
Arday resigned with immediate effect on August 5, 2026, after Cambridge confirmed it was reviewing information concerning his academic qualifications and honorary appointments.
The development has renewed attention on the academic, whose journey from a challenging childhood to one of Britain’s leading universities had previously been widely celebrated.
Who is Jason Arday?
Arday is a sociologist whose work focuses on race, inequality, education and social justice. Before joining Cambridge, he held academic positions at the University of Glasgow and Durham University.
He became Professor of Sociology of Education at Cambridge in 2023, making him the university’s youngest Black professor.
According to Liverpool John Moores University, where Arday obtained his PhD in Education, he experienced significant difficulties with speech and learning while growing up in south London. Despite those challenges, he progressed through higher education and established a career in academia.
Why is he facing scrutiny?
The controversy centres on allegations concerning Arday’s academic work and qualifications, including plagiarism claims.
Cambridge said it began its investigation after receiving new information relating to his academic qualifications and honorary appointments. The university has not announced a final finding of academic misconduct
Liverpool John Moores University previously investigated allegations concerning Arday’s doctoral thesis and said its investigation found no academic misconduct. The university continues to recognise his PhD as valid.
Arday has denied allegations of plagiarism and other claims concerning his professional record.
His resignation does not establish that he committed academic misconduct. The ongoing investigations will determine whether any formal findings are made.
