The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has intensified preparations for the forthcoming National Universities Commission (NUC) accreditation exercise, with the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Offiong Efanga Offiong, urging academic leaders to ensure their programmes meet all required standards.
Prof. Offiong gave the directive during an accreditation preparedness workshop organised by the Directorate of Academic Planning for Deans, Sub-Deans, Heads of Departments and Chairmen of Departmental Accreditation Committees at the Godswill Akpabio International Conference Centre.
Represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, Prof. Anthony Afam Okiwelu, the Vice-Chancellor described the workshop as timely and strategic, stressing the need for adequate preparation ahead of the exercise.
He urged participants to familiarise themselves with NUC requirements and ensure proper documentation, functional classrooms and laboratories, adequate learning resources, library facilities, relevant curricula and qualified academic and non-academic staff.
Prof. Offiong described accreditation as a collective responsibility and reaffirmed Management’s commitment to achieving a 100 per cent success rate.
He noted that successful accreditation would strengthen the recognition of UNICAL’s academic programmes, promote quality education and support the production of competent graduates.
The Vice-Chancellor also disclosed that 27 programmes are due for accreditation, urging departments to work towards successful outcomes and improved institutional ranking.
Earlier, the Director of Academic Planning, Prof. Bassey James Ejue, described the workshop as a strategic step towards preparing the University for the exercise.
Ejue urged stakeholders to remain committed to the process, declaring that “failure is not an option.”
The workshop featured presentations by Prof. Ajayi Omoogun, Prof. John Undie, Prof. Joe Asor, Prof. Lydia Abia-Bassey and Prof. Ejue on various aspects of the accreditation process.
The initiative is expected to strengthen UNICAL’s readiness and improve the capacity of academic leaders to successfully navigate the forthcoming NUC exercise.
