The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has raised fresh concerns over the state of Nigeria’s education system, while demanding the payment of the outstanding portion of lecturers’ salaries withheld during the 2022 nationwide strike.
ASUU National President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, made the call on Friday during a press conference in Jos, Plateau State.
Piwuna, who was accompanied by other union officials, including the Bauchi Zonal Coordinator, Prof. Timothy Namo; University of Jos ASUU branch chairman, Prof. Jurbe Molwus; Plateau State University branch chairman, Dr Vincent Choji; and the chairman of the union’s Legal Committee, said urgent steps were needed to address the challenges confronting the nation’s universities.
Speaking on the theme of the union’s press statement, titled “Nigerian Universities and Nigeria Today: Our Worries, Our Propositions,” Piwuna called for a comprehensive review of Nigeria’s education system.
He also expressed concern over the continued withholding of part of lecturers’ salaries arising from the 2022 industrial action, urging the Federal Government to resolve the matter.
According to the union, addressing the challenges facing universities requires stronger government commitment, improved funding and policies that would create a more sustainable environment for teaching, learning and research.
ASUU has repeatedly raised concerns over funding, staff welfare, infrastructure and other issues affecting the effective operation of Nigerian universities.
The union maintained that meaningful reforms in the education sector are necessary to prevent further deterioration and ensure Nigerian universities can compete effectively at the global level.
