Chelsea are set to keep Enzo Fernández after Manchester City failed to submit an acceptable offer before the club’s self-imposed 5pm UK deadline on Friday.
The deadline had been closely monitored amid growing speculation that Manchester City were considering a move for the Argentina international, particularly if they needed to strengthen their midfield this summer.
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea had made their position clear to Fernández’s representatives since May, with the club willing to consider his departure for a fee of £120 million.
However, no official bid meeting Chelsea’s demands arrived before the deadline. As a result, the club has now withdrawn the £120 million terms previously made available to Fernández’s camp.
The development means Chelsea currently expect Fernández to remain at Stamford Bridge for the 2026/27 campaign. Manchester City could still explore the possibility of a move later in the transfer window, but any future negotiations would take place under different conditions.
Fernández, 25, joined Chelsea from Benfica in January 2023 in a British-record transfer at the time. He has since established himself as an important member of the Chelsea midfield and remains under contract with the club.
Manchester City’s interest has been linked to uncertainty surrounding their midfield, with the club also dealing with speculation over the future of Rodri. City are managed by former Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca, adding another layer to the Fernández transfer story.
For now, however, Fernández appears set to continue his career at Chelsea, with the immediate possibility of a £120 million move having disappeared after Friday’s deadline.
