Troops of Operation Hadin Kai have repelled an early-morning attack by fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) on a military base in Mandaragirau, Biu Local Government Area of Borno State.
The attack occurred in the early hours of Saturday when the terrorists launched a simultaneous assault on the Forward Operating Base.
According to the Nigerian Army, the advancing fighters were detected through the troops’ early warning and surveillance systems before they could reach their intended positions.
The Army said a combat team was immediately deployed to intercept the attackers along one of their identified axes of advance.
The troops engaged the terrorists in a fierce exchange of fire, forcing them to withdraw from the area.
During the encounter, the soldiers recovered weapons and other items reportedly abandoned by the fleeing terrorists.
The Army said the operation demonstrated the effectiveness of the troops’ surveillance and rapid-response capabilities in countering terrorist attacks.
Operation Hadin Kai has continued to conduct offensive and defensive operations against insurgent groups in the North-East, particularly in areas affected by attacks from Boko Haram and ISWAP.
The military has also maintained that troops remain committed to protecting communities and restoring peace across the region.
Further details on the number of casualties suffered by the terrorists or troops were not immediately disclosed.
