President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, following his victory in the August 15 governorship election, saying the outcome demonstrates the strength of democracy in Nigeria.
Tinubu conveyed his congratulatory message in a statement issued on Sunday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
The President said he had personally spoken with Adeleke by telephone to congratulate him on securing another term in office.
According to Tinubu, Adeleke’s victory reflects the confidence placed in him by the people of Osun State and reinforces the importance of allowing citizens to freely choose their leaders through the ballot.
Adeleke, who contested the election on the platform of the Accord Party, was declared winner after polling 511,067 votes.
His closest challenger, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, scored 444,815 votes, while the African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate, Najeem Salaam, finished third with 17,180 votes.
The result gives Adeleke another four-year term as governor of Osun State. Reports indicate that he secured victory across 19 of the state’s 30 local government areas.
Tinubu described the election outcome as an indication that democratic values remain firmly rooted in the country.
He also urged political actors and citizens to accept the result peacefully and continue to work towards strengthening Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
The President’s congratulatory message comes after a closely contested election that featured 15 political parties, with Adeleke ultimately emerging ahead of his major challenger.
