$40m for a Ferrari? Here’s What Made This Car So Special

Written by Mary Bassey

Ferrari’s first fully electric production car has made history after a one-off version of the Luce sold for a staggering $40 million at the RM Sotheby’s Monterey auction in California.

The bespoke 2026 Ferrari Luce “Tailor Made,” known as “Chassis 0,” was sold during Monterey Car Week, with the proceeds going to the Ferrari Foundation to support future educational initiatives.

The extraordinary sale price makes the Luce the most expensive new car ever sold at auction, surpassing the previous record of $26 million set by a bespoke Ferrari Daytona SP3.

Ferrari described the vehicle as an “unrepeatable opportunity” to acquire the first production example of the Luce programme. The car was specially created through Ferrari’s Tailor Made division, which allows customers to personalise vehicles with exclusive materials, colours and finishes.

The $40 million price is also dramatically higher than the standard Luce’s expected starting price of about €550,000. The auction result was therefore not a reflection of the normal market price of the electric Ferrari, but the exceptional value attached to its historic first-production status and unique specification.

The Luce has attracted considerable attention since its unveiling, with some traditional Ferrari enthusiasts questioning the move into fully electric vehicles. Ferrari, however, has positioned the model as a major step into a new era while maintaining the performance and driving character associated with the brand.

Ferrari said every dollar from the charity auction will support educational initiatives through the Ferrari Foundation, turning the record-breaking sale into a fundraising effort as well as a milestone for the company’s electric-car programme.
