The spokesperson for the Imole Campaign Council of Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, Pelumi Olajengbesi, has withdrawn comments he made about Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, following a heated exchange during the Osun governorship election campaign.
Olajengbesi announced the withdrawal in a statement on Thursday, saying some of his earlier remarks may have been perceived as disrespectful to the Edo governor.
“I personally withdraw my earlier remarks that may have appeared disrespectful to the Governor of Edo State, His Excellency, Senator Monday Okpebholo,” he said.
The development followed a series of exchanges between Okpebholo and supporters of Adeleke during the election campaign.
Okpebholo, who campaigned for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun ahead of the August 15 governorship election, had criticised Adeleke during one of the party’s campaign activities, including making remarks about the governor’s dancing style.
The comments reportedly triggered reactions from members of Adeleke’s camp, with Olajengbesi subsequently responding to the Edo governor.
His latest statement, however, signals a move to draw a line under the controversy.
The development comes after the August 15 election, in which Adeleke secured a second term in office. The governor contested under the Accord Party and was declared winner after polling 511,067 votes, defeating APC candidate Bola Oyebamiji, who scored 444,815 votes.
Olajengbesi has remained one of the prominent voices defending Adeleke and his administration throughout the election campaign. Before the poll, he also criticised APC’s record in Osun and defended the governor’s performance.
The withdrawal of the remarks is expected to ease tensions arising from the exchanges between the two political camps following the campaign activities.
