Veteran Nollywood actress, Patience Ozokwor, popularly known as Mama G, has urged parents to allow their children to experience some level of struggle, saying it can help prepare them for the realities of life.
Ozokwor made the remarks during an interview with content creator Femi Babs, where she reflected on her journey to success and the challenges she faced while building her career.
According to the actress, parents who try to shield their children from every form of hardship may unintentionally prevent them from developing the resilience and independence needed to cope with life.
She stressed that allowing children to struggle does not mean deliberately making them suffer, but giving them the opportunity to go through challenges and learn from the process.
“The fastest way to ruin a child’s life is to say you don’t want them to suffer the way you did. I’m not saying allow them to suffer. What I’m saying is allow them to struggle. Go through the process,” she said.
Ozokwor also recalled some of the difficulties she experienced before becoming a recognised figure in Nollywood.
She revealed that at one point, she made and sold buns and puff-puff and prepared chicken, taking the food to audition venues and movie locations where people could buy from her.
The actress explained that the money she made from the sales helped her raise money for transportation and meet her needs as she pursued opportunities in the movie industry.
Ozokwor’s comments have sparked conversations about parenting, privilege and the importance of teaching children the value of hard work.
She maintained that children should understand the effort and sacrifices their parents made to provide for them rather than simply growing up expecting everything to be handed to them.
