President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has said Nigerians should begin to see noticeable reductions in transportation costs from October 1, 2026, as the Federal Government expands the use of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and electric vehicles across the country.
Tinubu made this known while providing an update on the National Affordable CNG Transit Programme, recalling his August 27 meeting with the 36 state governors, where they agreed to work towards making transportation more affordable through the wider deployment of CNG and electric-powered vehicles.
The President said the objective was to ensure that lower fuel costs translate directly into cheaper fares for commuters.
“From October 1, more Nigerians should begin to see measurable reductions in transportation costs,” Tinubu stated.
According to him, CNG-powered vehicles can spend between 60 and 80 per cent less on fuel compared with petrol-powered vehicles, creating room for transport operators to reduce fares.
An implementation committee chaired by Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq under the Nigeria Governors’ Forum is coordinating the programme with the Presidential Initiative on CNG and Electric Vehicles, state governments and other stakeholders.
The committee is working to identify priority transport routes and ensure that savings from cheaper fuel are passed on to commuters.
Tinubu also highlighted some early results from the programme. In Borno State, CNG and electric transport services reportedly charge between ₦50 and ₦100 on routes where commercial operators charge as much as ₦300 to ₦600.
In Oyo State, the introduction of CNG buses reportedly reduced the Lagos-Ibadan transport fare from about ₦8,000 to ₦3,200, while reductions of up to 50 per cent have also been recorded in Adamawa, Enugu, Plateau and parts of the Federal Capital Territory.
The President added that more than 120,000 vehicles have so far been converted to CNG, with additional conversion centres and refuelling stations being deployed across the country.
He urged state governments to speed up the implementation of the programme so that more Nigerians can benefit from lower transportation costs from the October 1 target date.
