The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Ebonyi State, Dr Ifeanyi Chukwuma Odii, has outlined plans to tackle child hawking, domestic servitude and other forms of child labour if elected governor in 2027.
Odii made the disclosure during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, where he identified poverty, unemployment, education and skills development as key issues his proposed administration would address.
The PDP candidate said economic hardship was one of the factors forcing some families to send children away from their communities to work as domestic helpers or engage in street hawking.
To address the situation, Odii said his administration would establish skills-acquisition centres across Ebonyi’s 13 local government areas to equip young people with practical skills for employment and self-reliance.
He listed carpentry, POP installation, tailoring, animal husbandry and fishery among the areas of training being proposed. According to him, each centre would have the capacity to accommodate about 3,000 people, potentially reaching about 39,000 Ebonyians across the state.
Odii also said education would be a major priority of his administration, with plans for scholarships and improved learning environments to encourage children to remain in school rather than engage in economic activities at an early age.
He further proposed increased investment in agriculture, healthcare, rural roads and job creation, saying Ebonyi’s agricultural and mineral resources could be better developed to improve household incomes.
The PDP candidate maintained that tackling child labour should go beyond simply banning the practice, arguing that government must also address the poverty and lack of opportunities that contribute to it.
His proposals form part of his broader campaign agenda ahead of the 2027 Ebonyi governorship election, with employment, education, human-capital development and economic diversification among the issues he has highlighted.
