Nigeria’s total public debt stock has climbed to N166.79 trillion as of June 30, 2026, representing an increase of about N7.44 trillion from the N159.35 trillion recorded at the end of March, according to the latest figures released by the Debt Management Office (DMO).
The DMO published the latest debt figures on September 25, 2026, showing that the country’s public debt stock increased by approximately 4.67 per cent during the second quarter of the year.
The latest figure comprises both domestic and external obligations. Domestic debt stood at approximately N91.59 trillion, accounting for about 54.91 per cent of the total debt stock, while external debt accounted for the remaining portion. In dollar terms, Nigeria’s total public debt was put at about $120.93 billion.
The DMO’s latest release also includes separate figures for Federal Government domestic debt, external debt and the domestic debt stock of states and the Federal Capital Territory as of June 30, 2026.
The increase comes amid the Federal Government’s continued borrowing activities to finance government programmes and other fiscal obligations. The DMO remains responsible for managing Nigeria’s public debt and publishing periodic updates on the country’s debt position.
The latest figures provide an update on the country’s borrowing position as the government continues efforts to manage its fiscal obligations and debt-service commitments.
