A fire outbreak has ravaged the Western Marine Command office of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) in Apapa, Lagos State, destroying properties estimated to be worth millions of naira.
The incident occurred on Monday, September 28, with the fire reportedly breaking out at about 10:23 a.m. following an electrical surge in the conference room before spreading to other sections of the building.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), officers on duty made frantic efforts to contain the flames before officials of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service arrived at approximately 10:45 a.m. to assist with the firefighting operation.
The blaze reportedly caused significant damage to the office, although the full extent of the destruction was yet to be established at the time of filing this report.
The Deputy Comptroller of Customs, Timothy Jonah, who had only recently resumed at the command to take over from his predecessor, described the incident as unfortunate.
The fire outbreak comes as a setback for the command, which plays a role in the Nigeria Customs Service’s maritime enforcement and operations along the country’s waterways.
While the reported electrical surge is believed to have triggered the incident, further assessment would be necessary to establish the full circumstances surrounding the outbreak and determine the extent of the losses.
No official confirmation of casualties was contained in the initial report.
