Navy Discovers 40,000 Litres of Suspected Crude Oil in Delta

Written by Mary Bassey

The Nigerian Navy has uncovered about 40,000 litres of substance suspected to be stolen crude oil stored in a large dugout reservoir in the Oteghele general area of Delta State.

The discovery was made on October 7, 2026, by personnel of the Nigerian Navy Ship DELTA (NNS DELTA) during an intelligence-led operation targeting suspected crude oil theft and other illegal activities in the area.

According to the Navy, the operation followed credible intelligence on the activities of suspected oil thieves operating within its area of responsibility.

The suspected crude oil was found concealed in a large dugout reservoir, which the naval team subsequently handled in line with established procedures.

The latest operation highlights the continued efforts by the Nigerian Navy to disrupt illegal oil activities and prevent suspected oil thieves from accessing and exploiting the nation’s petroleum resources.

The Oteghele area has previously come under naval operations over suspected crude oil theft and illegal refining activities. The Navy said it would continue to rely on intelligence-led operations to dismantle illegal oil activities and protect critical petroleum assets across the Niger Delta.
