Nigeria’s crude oil production has reached its highest level in more than six years, exceeding its production quota set by the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) for the fourth consecutive month.
According to the latest production figures released on Sunday by the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), the country’s average crude oil output increased to 1.56 million barrels per day (bpd) in June 2026. In addition, condensate production averaged 0.18 million bpd, bringing Nigeria’s total oil and condensate output to 1,735,398 barrels per day.
The latest performance represents the country’s strongest crude oil production level in 74 months, reflecting sustained improvements in the upstream oil sector.
Industry experts attribute the increase to enhanced security around oil facilities, reduced incidents of pipeline vandalism and crude oil theft, as well as improved operational efficiency by oil producers. The Federal Government has also intensified efforts to protect critical oil infrastructure through coordinated security operations and stronger collaboration with host communities.
Nigeria’s ability to consistently exceed its OPEC production quota signals a significant recovery in the country’s oil sector after years of production challenges caused by insecurity, aging infrastructure and operational disruptions.
The improved output is expected to strengthen government revenue, boost foreign exchange earnings and support the implementation of the 2026 national budget, which relies heavily on oil income. Analysts, however, note that sustaining the current production level will depend on continued investments, effective security measures and stable operating conditions across the Niger Delta.
The NUPRC said it remains committed to supporting increased production while ensuring compliance with industry regulations and promoting sustainable development in Nigeria’s upstream petroleum sector.
