The Nigerian Senate has urged the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, to prioritise the completion of abandoned and ongoing road projects across the country before embarking on new ones.
The lawmakers stressed the need for the Federal Government to focus on completing existing projects to ensure that public funds are properly utilised and Nigerians can benefit from road infrastructure already under construction.
The Senate’s position highlights concerns over the number of road projects that remain unfinished in different parts of the country, despite the huge financial resources committed to their execution.
The lawmakers also emphasised the importance of ensuring that ongoing projects are completed within reasonable timelines to reduce transportation difficulties, improve road safety and support economic activities.
Road infrastructure remains a major concern in Nigeria, with many communities facing challenges linked to poor road conditions, delayed construction and abandoned projects.
The appeal to Umahi is aimed at encouraging better prioritisation of government spending, ensuring that existing commitments receive adequate attention before additional projects are introduced.
The Ministry of Works, under Umahi’s leadership, is responsible for the development and maintenance of federal roads across the country.
The Senate’s call underscores the need for effective project monitoring, proper funding and timely execution of road construction projects to improve transportation and connectivity nationwide.
