Ondo Governor Makes Big Move Ahead of Pa Fasoranti’s Burial

Written by Mary Bassey

Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has set up a 13-member committee to organise a state burial for late Afenifere leader and elder statesman, Pa Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti, who died at the age of 100.

The committee will work with the deceased’s family and the leadership of Afenifere, the pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, to coordinate a befitting burial programme.

According to a statement issued by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Prince Ebenezer Adeniyan, the committee will be chaired by the state Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr Kayode Ajulo, SAN, while Apostle Eniola Olushola will serve as secretary.

Other members include Gbenga Fasua, Gbenga Atiba, Kosemani Kolawole, Bakkita Bello, Idowu Otetubi, Modupe Martins, George Asonja, Muyiwa Ogunyemi, Stephen Abitogun and Adetunji Gbenga.

The state government said the decision to accord Fasoranti a state burial was in recognition of his contributions to Ondo State, Yorubaland and Nigeria.

Governor Aiyedatiwa described the late Afenifere leader as a respected elder statesman whose life was marked by service, wisdom and selfless leadership.

Fasoranti died on October 20, 2026, after celebrating his 100th birthday on May 11. He was a prominent figure in Nigeria’s pro-democracy struggle and served as Commissioner for Finance in the old Ondo State from 1979 to 1983.

His family has announced that the funeral service and interment will take place on December 17, 2026, at St David’s Cathedral, Ijomu, Akure, Ondo State.

The government’s committee is expected to work with the family and Afenifere leadership to ensure a dignified farewell for the late nationalist.
