Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has condemned the remand of Nollywood actress Doris Ogala at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre in Lagos, describing the case as an alleged misuse of the law.

Ogala was remanded on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, by the Federal High Court in Lagos pending the hearing and determination of her bail application over allegations involving Pastor Chris Okafor. She pleaded not guilty to the charges against her. <escape></escape>

In his reaction, Sowore criticised the use of the Cybercrimes Act in disputes involving private relationships. He also raised concerns about the protection of Ogala’s fundamental rights and the need for a fair hearing.

The activist argued that law enforcement agencies should not use cybercrime laws to intimidate individuals or settle personal disputes. He called for due process and insisted that the judiciary must remain independent and impartial.

The case followed allegations that Ogala published intimate photographs of the cleric without his consent, circulated electronic messages allegedly containing false information, and threatened to release further damaging material unless he compensated her or bought her a house.

The prosecution presented these allegations in court, but Ogala has pleaded not guilty, and they remain to be determined through the legal process.

Justice Akintayo Aluko ordered her remand after ruling that the defence had not presented sufficient grounds to justify her immediate release. The judge also directed that the bail application be heard expeditiously.

The court adjourned the matter until October 30, 2026, for the hearing of Ogala’s bail application.

The development has attracted public attention, with concerns being raised about freedom of expression, the application of cybercrime laws and the rights of defendants awaiting bail decisions.
