Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, has denied allegations that he ordered the withdrawal of a private venue booked for a town hall meeting scheduled to feature Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and his running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso.
The controversy followed reports that the management of Amadeo Event Centre in Enugu withdrew permission for the event less than 24 hours before the scheduled meeting on Thursday, October 29, 2026.
Reacting to a video circulating on social media, Mbah said he had no involvement in the decision to deny the organisers access to the facility.
In a statement shared on his X account on Wednesday, the governor described the allegation as false and accused opposition figures of attempting to attract public attention through what he called unfounded claims.
Mbah also warned against defamatory statements, noting that while democracy guarantees freedom of expression, it does not permit individuals to defame others. He added that legal channels were available for anyone seeking redress.
The dispute emerged after NDC officials alleged that the venue had been withdrawn despite an earlier booking and payment. The party’s Enugu East senatorial candidate, Princess Ada Ogbu, was among those who publicly raised concerns over the development.
The party alleged that pressure had been exerted on the venue’s management to prevent the gathering from taking place. However, the governor has rejected claims that he was responsible for the reported cancellation.
The incident has generated political debate over the circumstances surrounding the venue withdrawal and the ability of opposition parties to hold public engagements.
As of the latest reports, the central dispute remains whether the venue’s withdrawal was influenced by political pressure, an allegation Mbah has firmly denied.
