CAF Makes U-Turn on AFCON, Restores Two-Year Format

Written by Mary Bassey

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially announced that the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) will continue to take place every two years, reversing its earlier decision to move the tournament to a four-year cycle.

CAF announced the development on Thursday, October 29, 2026, following a unanimous decision by its Executive Committee (EXCO).

The decision reverses the plan announced in December 2025, which proposed that AFCON should be held every four years, while a new African Nations League would take place every two years.

According to CAF, the proposed Nations League would require several years before generating the financial resources needed to support the growth and competitiveness of African football.

CAF President, Patrice Motsepe, said the decision was taken to protect and promote the interests of African football, its 54 member associations and African players competing for clubs outside the continent.

The next AFCON will take place in 2027, with Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda serving as co-hosts.

Subsequent editions are scheduled for 2028, 2031 and 2033. CAF also confirmed that there will be no AFCON tournament in 2030 because it coincides with the FIFA World Cup year.

The latest decision restores the competition’s traditional two-year format, bringing an end to months of uncertainty surrounding the future schedule of Africa’s biggest football tournament.
