Cryptocurrency exchange Binance is investigating a massive security breach estimated to have affected approximately $6.3 billion worth of digital assets, in what could become the largest cryptocurrency heist ever recorded.
The incident has prompted the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange to temporarily suspend deposits and withdrawals while it works with law enforcement agencies, blockchain intelligence firms and industry partners to trace and recover the affected funds.
According to Binance’s preliminary investigation, the breach may have originated from a compromised laptop belonging to a DevOps engineer. The attacker allegedly exploited access to an internal service container to carry out unauthorised withdrawal transactions.
Binance, however, said it had found no evidence that wallet private keys were leaked.
The exchange disclosed that approximately $3 billion worth of the affected assets had been frozen on blockchain networks through cooperation with its partners. The whereabouts and recovery prospects of the remaining funds are still being investigated.
Binance has assured customers that their funds remain safe and pledged to cover all losses resulting from the incident using its Secure Asset Fund for Users (SAFU) and company funds.
Blockchain intelligence firms have also reportedly linked the attack to North Korean hacking groups, although investigations are ongoing.
The incident has raised fresh concerns about cryptocurrency exchange security and triggered a negative reaction across the digital asset market, with Bitcoin and other major cryptocurrencies recording price declines.
Binance said it would release a detailed technical report after completing its investigation and verifying the facts. It has not announced a definite time for the restoration of normal deposit and withdrawal services.
